HIGHLIGHTS:-

Windows 11 has been successfully converted to a six-year-old Windows Phone device by a developer.
The Lumia 950 XL, which features a Snapdragon 810 SoC, is running a native version of Windows 11.

Windows 11 was revealed last week, and Microsoft has already made a trial version of the operating system available for download in both x64 and Arm versions. Now, it appears that an experienced programmer has succeeded in running Windows 11 Arm on Microsoft’s last flagship Windows Phone.

Gustave Monce shared a YouTube video and images of Windows 11 on the Lumia 950 XL on Twitter (h/t: Liliputing). Monce shared an image of the phone earlier this month that looked to display Windows 11, but he subsequently stated that it was really Windows 11 running through a remote desktop.

This time, though, the company has verified that the Lumia 950 XL will be running a native version of Windows 11 Arm.

When using Windows11, the Snapdragon 810 chipset in the Lumia 950 XL chugs, and you’ll notice delays when double-tapping the screen, launching the file explorer, going to the start menu, and other operations. It also appears that screen rotation is now quite unstable. However, we get a good understanding of how the UI would seem on a smartphone and how features like Snap Layouts would operate on such a small screen.

While Windows11 previews don’t yet allow Android applications, we’re curious how the Lumia 950 XL will fare when this feature is added. It wouldn’t be the first time a Windows Phone preview got Android app support.

There has already been a transfer of Windows 10 Arm to the six-year-old phone, so there is precedence here. Even still, the fact that Windows11 can operate on such an old phone (or even on phones at all) is a remarkable achievement. It’s particularly remarkable in light of Microsoft’s confusing system requirements for the upgrade.
